We are today enjoyng longer lifespans, but when we take a closer look we can see that during this time our health is generally worse. Often our illnesses remain once they begin and are managed rather than completely cured, e.g. joint pains, asthma, heart disease, digestive complaints, eczema and allergies to name a few.
The field of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is there ideally to address the problems that occur in the body, so that major diseass are 'nipped in the bud'.
One important branch of CAM is deoxification. Detox has recently become more importantas we are exposed to vast amounts of toxins in our modern world that were either unheard of 50 years ago or exposure to them was minimal, e.g. radiation, non-stick coatings, residues in drinking water.1
Every thing ingested, inhaled or applied has to be dealt with and safely eliminated by our bodies, so you can imagine the stress our elimination systems are constantly under and the overtime that the detox organs need to put in to eliminate these toxic substances.
To help our bodies deal with this excess burden and to keep them functioning optimally cleansing has become a vital part of health programmes that a given to patients.
Detoxification is a delicate process which needs close guidance by a qualified practitioner in order to give the best benefit.
I often give the example in talks that done incorrectly detoxification is like sweeping the garage floor without opening its door – you can end up wih toxins being dusted all around the body.
With the right guidance detox can produce an invigorating cleansing of the entire system and an improvement in our body's absorption of nutrients.

Your body usually tells you what it needs - you just need to learn how to listen, says Emma Unsworth.
I've always believed that any kind of detox is an unhealthy shock to the system. Nonetheless, ten years of excess and neglect had left my body looking weatherworn even by Manchester's low standards. Step in Sarah Rahman, qualified naturopath and herbalist, ready to detoxify me back to my former glory circa 1995 (but this time no Lycra - promise).
Sarah is keen to educate people so that they can treat the root of a problem rather than simply suppress aches and pains. Example: if you feel nauseous with a hangover, this is because your liver needs flushing. Instead of reaching for the paracetamol, blend grapefruit juice, olive oil and cayenne to make a drink. Your headache and nausea will be gone within the hour, and your organs won't have any nasty extras to deal with.
As well as treating acute problems, Sarah offers a personalised detox programme whereby she tailor-makes a course of all-natural medicines to suit an individual's lifestyle and physiology. After a lengthy consultation, I was set a six-week program for my bowels, liver and kidneys, along with a strict diet: no meat, dairy, wheat, alcohol or additives. I was advised to buy organic as much as possible, which was a good incentive to find out how to do this cheaply (see details below).
Sarah made me some capsules to be taken three times a day, along with a fig syrup to be taken halfway through my evening meal. A week into the bowel cleanse, I started on the bentonite clay - a grey powder to be mixed into a glass of cloudy apple juice five times a day. The theory is that toxins are positively charged and the clay is negatively charged, so as the particles pass through your system the toxins cling to them and are flushed out. It was by far the most unpleasant part of the process and when Sarah warned me I'd get a headache she wasn't kidding.
Still, a week later again and I felt better than had in years - energised, positive and more body aware - ready to start working on my own inner picture af Dorian Gray: my liver. As well more herb capsules, I took a flush first thing in the morning made from lemons, apple juice and olive oil. Finally, my kidneys got two weeks of TLC with a specially concocted tea plus a litre and a half of water per day.
After intensively cleansing, the next crucial step was to repopulate my gut with good bacteria (probiotics) as well as soothe the digestive tract with healing herbs.
It's not a quick fix by any stretch of the imagination. But as they say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating (or in the actively avoiding) and I lost over half a stone, which I've kept off, even though I'm back to eating and boozing normally. And without the painkillers to console me afterwards, of course.
Naturopathic medicine is a truly natural and effective form of therapy. By using a combination of different therapies and herbal medicines, Naturopathy can assist in the treatment a wide variety of ailments and pains such as backache, hayfever and asthma as well as more serious conditions.
Naturopathy recognises the body's ability to heal itself and takes into account the whole being. It incorporates powerful methods, to address the root of various ailments and disease, often caused by minor imbalances being disregarded and dismissed over a period of time. These methods, are based on careful observations of the human body over thousands of years. Diagnostic techniques used include, Health Screening (using Bio – Resonance testing) for checking for food intolerances, chemical toxins, candida, other diagnostic tools include, iridology, pulse, and tongue diagnosis.
The Body Whispers is clinic offering alternative naturopathy treatments and specialises in herbal medicine. Herbs have been used for medicinal and therapeutic purposes without ill effect for over fifty thousand years. Each plant contains constituents that work together to counteract disease.
The herbalist is concerned with treating the whole person. A prescription is formulated, from hundreds of possible herbs, to suit the individual’s needs and correct underlying causes.
Systematic organ detoxification is often carried out as part of the treatment programme as many of today's ailments are due to insufficient toxin elimination. Herbs can be applied for a vast array of conditions, from acute illnesses, e.g. ear infections, conjunctivitis, influenza to chronic ones, e.g. bowel disorders, cystitis, respiratory complaints, arthritis.
Naturopath and medical herbalist Sarah Rahman N.D. Dip.Herbs believes passionately in holistic medicine and at The Body Whisper she hopes to draw on her diverse experience and knowledge to prescribe a treatment appropriate to your individual and specific health concerns.
